What's behind teeth grinding / bruxism?

Why on earth do some people fall into a pattern of grinding their teeth at night when they're fast asleep? It damages your teeth, makes enough noise to disturb a sleeping partner, and can leave you with a sore and painful jaw, and headaches. What possible purpose can it serve?  

It's possible that the grinding action has a soothing effect, like thumb sucking. Once you've acquired the habit, it seems impossible to stop, because you don't know you're doing it. You don't choose to do it; your mind goes into autopilot and it happens all by itself.
